Beautiful town, great walking routes
Located in a convenient location, almost in the middle of this huge island, Rethymno is a great spot, whatever your purpose of travel is. Within 45 minutes you can drive to the west and enjoy Chania, while Heraklion is approximately an hour to the east. Moreover, the superior southern coast of Crete is only 35 minutes drive from Rethymno, since the island is quite narrow in this area.
- Check our to-do list for Chania, here.
Rethymno itself is very easy to explore on foot. The old town with Fortezza overlooking the area is a great start. You will find plenty of small restaurants, as well as souvenir shops. Keep walking to the marina, then along the seaside pedestrian road. Try it in the evening, you will be amazed by the sunset.
Excursions and beaches
A few kilometers east of Rethymno you will find the beach of Geropotamos. Clear water, few people, a canteen for the essentials. Next to the beach, Geropotamos forms a lake, while the area is a very important refuge for birds and animals.
- Tip: You will see an arch in the sea while looking west of Geropotamos beach. There is one more beach over there, that is definitely worth going!
Kourtaliotiko gorge
Do not miss the descent into the gorge and the beautiful waterfalls. You will find the church of Osios Nikolaos of Kourtaliotis, that’s your spot. There are several stairs, but the path is short. Even with an infant you can do it within 40 minutes by taking pictures.
Of course, if you decide to cross the whole gorge on foot, it will be an experience to remember!
Preveli, picturesque like in a fairytale
The panoramic view, the walk through the reborn palm trees and the crystal clear water will compensate you for any fatigue. Drive there as early morning as possible, to avoid the crowds arriving by tourist boats later.
Plakias, Damnoni, Ammoudi
Easily accessible, they offer several accommodation options and beautiful beaches, of course. Our favorite one is Damnoni, what about yours?
